CLINTON, N.Y. - Katie Riley recorded a hat trick as the third-ranked Bowdoin College field hockey team shutout Hamilton College 6-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Liz Znamierowski added two goals and Cathleen Smith tacked on one. Smith, Rachel Kennedy and Olivia King contributed one assist apiece. Kayla Lessard started in goal for the Polar Bears and was relieved by Hannah Gartner for the final 21:43. Neither goalkeeper made a save in the combined shutout. Victoria Trentini stopped 16 shots for the Continentals in the loss. Katie White came in for the final 21:43 and made four saves in goal.
Bowdoin (9-1 overall, 6-1 NESCAC) broke open the scoring just 4:23 into the game. Following a penalty corner, Riley collected the rebound off Brooke Phinney's shot and fired it into the back of the cage.
Riley scored her second goal on a two-on-none breakaway in the ninth minute. Smith brought the ball up on the right side and passed to Riley on her left who scored on the one-timer to give Bowdoin a 2-0 lead.
Znamierowski scored the Polar Bears' next two goals in a span of 4:24. Her first goal came at 17:29 on a pass from Kennedy following a penalty corner and the second, an unassisted goal on a rebound in front of the cage. Bowdoin led 4-0 at the half.
In the 44th minute, Riley sealed the hat trick when she drove on the goal line and fired a shot past Trentini for an unassisted goal.
The Polar Bears added one final goal just 1:43 later. King sent a shot in from just outside the circle and Smith redirected the ball in for a goal.
Bowdoin outshot the Continentals 39-4 and held an advantage in penalty corners at 15-4.
Hamilton (0-11, 0-8) will host Colby College in a NESCAC game on Sunday, Oct. 14. Bowdoin travels to nationally ranked No.15 Amherst in a battle of top-20 teams.
