WATERVILLE, Maine - Cathleen Smith had a hand in all three goals as the Bowdoin College field hockey team defeated Colby 3-0 on Saturday.
The sixth-ranked Polar Bears improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Mules fall to 4-5 overall and 0-5 in the league.
Katie Riley, who had a goal and an assist, scored the game-winning goal at 7:31 of the opening half. Smith's centering pass was blasted into the back of the cage by Riley. The duo reversed roles at 15:25. This time Riley had the cross and Smith scored her first goal of the game from in front on a hard blast.
Smith scored the final goal of the game at 45:50 on a play that started off a penalty corner. Brooke Phinney dumped in a pass to Smith, who turned and shot for the score.
Bowdoin had a 21-2 shot advantage and a 5-1 margin in penalty corners. The Polar Bears' Kayla Lessard did not have to make a save, while Colby keeper Michelle Burt made 10 stops.
