BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College field hockey team is ranked second in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Preseason Poll released on Tuesday.
The Polar Bears are ranked behind defending national champion, The College of New Jersey, and received six first-place votes. NESCAC rival Middlebury is ranked third while Salisbury and Messiah round out the top-five. In addition to Bowdoin and Middlebury, three other NESCAC schools appear in the rankings: Amherst (#12), Tufts (#14) and Trinity (#15).
Bowdoin is coming off a phenomenal campaign in 2011 which saw the team roll off 19 consecutive wins before falling the NCAA Semifinals. The Polar Bears won their seventh New England Small College Athletic Conference championship and advanced to the Division III "Final Four" for the sixth time in program history.
The Polar Bears will open their 2012 campaign at home on September 8 when they host Wesleyan University at 12:00 p.m.
