BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin senior linebacker Joey Cleary has been named Second Team All-East Region by D3football.com
The 2013 NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year, Cleary was the only NESCAC defender to make either First or Second Team All-Region and will now be considered for D3Football.com All-American honors that will be announced December 20. Cleary is the first Polar Bear to earn D3Football.com All-Region honors since Pat Noone '12 and Laurence Duggan '10 both earned recognition in 2009.
Cleary amassed a league-best 99 tackles, which was the highest total in the conference since 2009 and tied for the third most stops in Bowdoin single-season history. He registered 10 or more tackles in six games with a season-high 19 tackles coming against Bates on November 2. Cleary also recorded 8.5 tackles for a loss, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions. He finishes his career at Bowdoin with 255 career tackles, 5.5 sacks and six interceptions. He was the first Polar Bear to garner NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year recognition since the league began conference-only play in 2000.
