First-Year Duo Lead Bowdoin Baseball Postseason Honors
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Four Bowdoin College baseball players have been named All-New England Small College Athletic Conference performers by the league office on Wednesday. First-years Christian Martin (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and John Lefeber (Branford, Conn.) led the way with First Team All-Conference honors while Martin was tabbed as the league's Rookie of the Year.
Senior 3B Brett Gorman (Bedford, N.Y.) and junior SS Jordan Edgett (Lynn, Mass.) also collected honors and were recognized as Second Team choices. The Polar Bears finished their season with a record of 24-14 and as runners-up at the rain-shortened NESCAC Tournament last weekend.
Martin and Lefeber were the only first-years chosen to the league's First Team and are the first set of rookie teammates in league history to be named First Team All-Conference together. Martin was also named Third Team All-New England on Wednesday.
Martin burst onto the scene with an outstanding first-year campaign, posting a 6-1 record, tying for second on the school's single-season victories list. His 3.27 earned run average was tied for the best on the team while his 71 strikeouts in 66 innings pitched led all NESCAC hurlers. Batters could only muster a .250 batting average against the southpaw this spring.
Lefeber pulled double-duty to earn First Team recognition, batting a team-high .393 with a .421 on base percentage and 25 RBI in the outfield while also posting a 3.27 ERA and 3-3 record on the mound over six starts and 10 appearances. Lefeber saved his best for last, as he enjoyed a scalding-hot NESCAC Tournament, batting .529 (9-for-17) during a 2-1 showing at the league tourney. On the hill, Lefeber allowed eight hits, one walk, and one earned run while striking out four over 7.1 frames in a no-decision against eventual champion Tufts.
Gorman wrapped up a stellar career with a .301 batting average, .412 on base percentage and NESCAC-leading 16 doubles this spring. Gorman also ranked among the league leaders in total bases with 71 and drove in a team-high 30 runs batted in. A four-year starter, he rounds out his time at Bowdoin with 153 career hits to rank fifth all-time at Bowdoin. His 44 career doubles rank second in school history while his 117 runs batted in rank third. His 248 total bases are fifth in program history as he finished his career with a .346 batting average.
Starting on a regular basis for the first time in his career, Edgett enjoyed a fantastic campaign, finishing with career-highs in hits (41), rbi (26), runs scored (27) and total bases (66). His 15 doubles were second on the team and in the NESCAC, behind only Gorman, and he finished the season with a .293 batting average. Edgett was particularly lethal in the biggest games, as he ranked third in the league with a .477 batting average in conference games this year.
